Cyber bullying and social networks: What we need to know to protect our students
In this seminar, I’m going to talk about how it is that children and adolescents are using social media and what we’ve learned through the research related to a number of domains. So, first, what spaces are kids finding themselves in and what are the prevalence rates of them using certain types of technology from texting to instant messaging to ahh blogging to entering into chat rooms and uhm we’re also going to chat about some web sites we’ve recently found that kids are spending quite a bit of time in that people may not even be aware of these sites are popping up all over the place whether they are pro anorexia sites, or sites in which kids can randomly find themselves in any chat room – chat roulette – uhm also other sites that might place kids at risk of for being exposed to even deviant role models, in appropriate sexual content. SO we’ll spend some time talking about that so that we are all on the same page as to what and where and what they are doing and where they are at and how much time they are spending there and at the same time talk about the very, very young science around how kids are engaging in those social media, how it is that the social dynamics are either mapping onto what we know about how kids interact face-to-face, in schools, in peer groups and what that is looking like in the context of these social media forums. That’s important because understandably I study bullying and sexual harassment and what we are trying to understand is how bullying face to face, although still the most prevalent, whether or not it takes on a different form when a kid uses social media or technology to harass or isolate or exclude or spread sexual rumors and so it’s going to in this 45 minute period will just kind of give you a sense of what kids are doing and how it is that as both social scientists and prevention scientist we have to step up our game, if you will, to understand what these kids are doing and make sure our prevention programs match the technology the kids are engaged with.
